Software Bugs
Memory Failure-Tesla recalls 135,000 vehicles over software failures
Tesla recalls 135,000 vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Security Administration (NHTSA), due to the touchscreen in these vehicles can fail when a memory chip runs out of storage capacity, which can cause a variety of failures including error in the self-autopilot function.
In a mid-January letter, the NHTSA explained to Tesla from the department finding's that the chips are to be blamed for causing failures in the software and needs to be replaced.
However according to WSJ, Tesla disagrees that the issue is a failure but ensured by making the automaker recall some number of vehicles for investigating the issue.
It is said by the manufacturer that when the touchscreen's flash memory reaches the end of its lifespan, it can cause the center monitor to trigger failures in the software components. In turn, these failures can unintentionally lead to the loss of external turn signaling lighting, rearview camera display, and defog/defrost control settings.
North American Blackout-August 2003
On August 14 and 15, the northern U.S. and southern Canada suffered the worst power blackout in history. More than 50 million people lost power due to an aging grid that encountered a series of technological flaws, stretching from New York City to Ohio. Areas affected extended from New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey west to Michigan, and from Ohio north to Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario.
It all started when a power plant along the southern shore of Lake Erie, Ohio went offline due to the high demand which put the rest of the power network under greater stress. The incident could have been avoided if the software that triggered the alarm system had not been bugged. The alarm could have alerted the officials at the right time to avert the incident, but no one tried fixing the software bug.
